Social Gathering for International Students and Researchers in 2019
A social gathering for international students and researchers was held on Dec 13th 2019 at Kofu Campus. About 170 people, including community representative, international students and researchers together with their family members, and university staff took part in the event this year.
This annual event hosted by the President of University of Yamanashi, Dr. Shinji Shimada aims at deepening mutual understanding among the international students and researchers, university staff and community representatives.
The gathering started with a welcome address by the President and followed by the speeches from the Mayor of Kofu city and the Mayor of Chuo city. One Vietnam student from Medical Campus and two German students from Kofu Campus delivered their speech to express their appreciation as representative of all international students.
All participants enjoyed Japanese and Halal dishes and a chorus by the residents of international dormitory.
Cultural Exchange Event at International Residence hall Annex
Annual cultural exchange event for international students and the local community (Members of Iwakubo Resident’s Association) was held at International Residence Hall Annex on Saturday, Nov. 23 2019.
This was the 16th event and nearly 200 people including Mr. Yuichi Higuchi, the Mayor of Kofu City,took part in the event.
International students introduced their cultures by entertaining community members with their hand-made dishes. There were 26 kinds of dishes from 11 countries (China, Pakistan, Malaysia, Germany, U.K., France etc.), and all these traditional dishes were tasty so much.
As the highlight of the event, international students experienced Mochi-tsuki (pounding steamed sticky rice into rice cake) with the kind guidance by the members of Iwakubo Resident’s Association.
After enjoying the mochi, participants enjoyed chorus by the international students as well as traditional dram performance by Iwakubo Resident’s Association. It was such a heart-warming day that further strengthened the tie between international students and local community.

Disaster Prevention Lecture for International Students
On November 5, the Disaster Prevention Lecture was given by Kofu police station to International Students at Kofu Campus.
Through the lecture, students learned how to react and behave in case any natural disaster happens as well as the importance of confirming their nearest evacuation sites and prompt evacuation. They were also advised to share the knowledge they learned today with other international students and support each other in case of emergency.
At the end of lecture, supporting system for international students and travellers from other countries was introduced and useful emergency kits were distributed to the international students.
Japanese flower arrangement KADO event for the foreign students
We held “Japanese flower arrangement KADO event” for the foreign students
on 1st November, before the Kofu-Campus Festival.
This event is held every year in this season,
with the cooperation of flower arrangement club’s teachers and students.
This year, 12 foreign students from China, France, Thailand, Germany
and Madagascar participated.
They arranged the materials used for flower arrangement
like Chrysanthemum, Lily, Aleka palm and Solidaco with full of individuality.
Those finished flower arrangements were displayed and seen by many visitors
at the Kofu-Campus Festival.
Annual Field Trip for International Students, 2019
The Center for International Education and Exchange organizes this field trip every year to provide international students a short trip cheap and safe. The destination of this year is Shiszuoka and the south part of Yamanashi for 2 days, Sept.18th and 19th. They experienced Japanese culture and nature.
On the first day, participants visited Nakatomi Washi no Sato for papermaking, Shiraito Waterfalls, Syuzengzi Temple and Koibitomisaki and stayed at Hotel in Ugusu in Shizuoka.
On the following day, the participants experienced tea plucking in Izu Nagaoka and visited Yakult Factory and Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine. The participants got impressed deeply with Japanese cultures through this trip.
In addition, five Japanese students joined this trip. They studied about the places we visited and the foreign students’ background such as their religious, cultures and allergy beforehand to make the foreign sturents to have a good time. This trip was the good opportunity even for those Japanese students to deepen the understanding to foreign students.
A University Information Session was held at Fuji International Language Institu
On 27th August, a University information session was held at Shinjuku School of Fuji International Language Institute where many excellent foreign students are learning Japanese aiming to enter universities or graduate courses in Japan .
Three staffs from the university introduced the newest information such as the good living environment at kofu city, attractive points of education system and a variety of distinctive researches of University of Yamanashi.
40 students from science classes attended the under graduate session and 5 students attended graduate school session. Especially,the graduate school session was held interactively and the students could receive detailed information on their majors and specific instructions on how to find supervisors working on the fields of their interests.
University of Yamanashi seek for motivated and talented international students and the Center for International Education and Exchange and Office of International Affairs try to reach these students by visiting universities and Japanese language schools both in Japan and overseas.
A delegate from University of Sultan Zainal Abidin visited our university
A delegate from University of Sultan Zainal Abidin, Malaysia, led by Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Basri bin Awang Mat Dahan, visited our University on September 10 th ,2019. The other members of the delegate are,Mr.Ismail bin Ahma, Registrar ,Prof. Dr. Nordin bin Simbak, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Mr.Kazuki Iseno, Liaison Officer.
The delegate exchanged opinions with Prof.Masayuki Takeda, Directer of university hospital, Prof.Hiroshi Onishi, Chair of Department of Radiology, Prof. Yao Jian, Director of International Education and Exchange of faculty of Medicine, and Professor Xiaoyang Mao, Director of the Center for International Education and Exchange . Then guided by Prof Onishi, the delegate visited university hospital.
After that, the delegate paid a courtesy call on President Shinji Shimada. Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Basri bin Awang Mat Dahan and President Shinji Shimada signed the letter of intent and agreed to further promote the exchanges and collaborations between two universities.
University of Slutan Zainal Abidin is one of seven national universities Which possess the faculty of Medice in Malaysia, and the university is planning to open University attached hospital on 2020. It is expected that the exchange between the two universities will be further activated through this visit.
The Debriefing Session of Exchange Programs and Spring Programs
We had 40 students who participated in the spring programs: 10 to Leicester University, U. K.; 10 to the University of British Columbia, Canada; 15 to Hangzhou Dianzi University, China and 5 to the University of Northern Iowa, U.S. This session relieved students joining short-term study abroad programs in 2019 summer, facilitated understanding of what would be expected and further enhanced motivation for studying abroad.
International Exchange Camp for Freshman International Students and Student Supp
May 11th Sat. To 12th Sun., 2019, International exchange camp for freshman international undergraduate students and student support volunteers was held near Lake Yamanaka. 13 freshman international students and 16 support volunteers participated in the camp.
On the first day, participants visited the world heritage site, Oshino Hakkai where divided teams were to work on the assignment that required them to take pictures, which show good cross-culture examples between Japan and the home country of the international students. All the teams walked around to find the good examples, eagerly exchanging their opinions, while enjoying the magnificent view of Mt. Fuji and beautiful Oshino Hakkai at the same time.
In the evening, the photo competition was held. Each team introduced their partners with good humor and made a presentation about the best pictures of the team. Then pictures which show the best piece of cross culture were voted as best works.
On the second day, they got an orientation for student support activities and walked in Lake yamanaka flower park where they enjoy the contrast of beautiful flowers and Mt. Fuji.
After the camp, many of the students became more eager to spend time together and to have more interest in different cultures. The camp was very successful to have participated students get to know each other better.
