Social Gathering for International Students and Researchers in 2018
A social gathering for international students and researchers was held on Dec 4th 2018 at Kofu Campus. About 170 people, including community representative, international students and researchers together with their family members, and university staff took part in the event this year.
This annual event hosted by the President of University of Yamanashi, Dr. Shinji Shimada aims at deepening mutual understanding among the international students and researchers, university staff and community representatives.
The gathering started with a welcome address by the President and followed by the speeches from the Mayor of Kofu city and the Mayor of Chuo city. Two international students from China and Mongolia delivered their speech in Japanese to express their appreciation on behalf of all international students.
All participants enjoyed Japanese and Halal dishes, a German Christmas song by German students and a chorus by the residents of international dormitory.
The Debriefing Session of Exchange Program and Summer Programs
The Debriefing Session of Exchange Program and Summer Programs was held on 26th November. In the session, three students returning from Eastern Kentucky University as exchange students and 19 students who participated in the summer programs at EKU and Grand View University presented their experiences and what they learned through their programs. This session relieved students joining short-term study abroad programs in 2019 spring, facilitated understanding of what is expected and further enhanced motivation for studying abroad.
Japanese Government Scholarship for 2019 Teacher Training Program
This is the scholarship program for foreign students to conduct research on school education at Japanese universities under Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship.

Japanese flower arrangement KADO event for the foreign students
We held “Japanese flower arrangement KADO event” for the foreign students on 2nd November, before the Kofu-Campus Festival. This event is held every year in this season, with the cooperation of flower arrangement club’s teachers and students.
This year, 21 foreign students from America, Australia, China, Germany, Thailand and Malaysia participated. They arranged the materials used for flower arrangement like strelitzia, Dypsis lutescens, blue fantasy and hypericum with full of individuality. Those finished flower arrangements were displayed and seen by many visitors at the Kofu-Campus Festival on 3rd and 4th November.
Crime Prevention Lecture
On 25th October, the Crime Prevention Lecture was given by Kofu Police Station to international students. 46 students attended this lecture on personal safety, traffic safety and the safeguarding of property in order to live in Japan safely. The lecture also included how to react and behave in case any natural disaster happens. The students learned that it is very important to support each other and get closer with local community. At the end of the lecture, they were given some useful security goods.
Orientation at the International Residence Hall
The Orientation was held at the International Residence Hall on 25th October. Students learned the rules and regulations of the hall and obtained useful information for their living, for example how to pay their bills, how to separate and throw away garbage and so on.
A Visit to Ashiyasu Elementary and Junior High Schools
Halloween party was held at Ashiyasu Elementary School and Junior High School on 24th October as one of activities for global education. Students from Ghana, Vietnam, France, Germany and Thailand joined it from the University and enjoyed intercultural exchange with 23 elementary school children and 19 junior high school students through games, Q&A sessions and the other activities. The children also sang beautiful Japanese songs for the international students. All participants had a very pleasant and heartwarming time.
A Delegate of Malaysia Government Visited University of Yamanashi
A delegate of Malaysia government including Honorable Datuk Seri Borhan Dolah (Director-General of Public Service Department), Honorable Datuk Dr. Rosslina bt. Mokhtar (Director of Human Capital Development Division), Mr. Zaflin Pakwanteh (Special Officer to Director-General), Mr. Abdul Ghani bin Selbi (Counselor, Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo), Mr. Nik Ahmad Syazwan Nik Azman (First Secretary of Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo) and Ms. Tomoka Wakamatsu (Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo) visited University of Yamanashi on October 16, 2018.
After paying courtesy visits to President Shinji Shimada, the group visited the Fuel Cell Nano Materials Research Center and hold a meeting with the students sponsored by Malaysian government.
More than 80 Malaysian government sponsored students have graduated from our university so far and are active in various fields in Malaysia. Thirty-two international students are currently enrolled from Malaysia, 23 of whom are government-sponsored students. Opinion exchange were also held on the topics such as the supporting to the Malaysian students and the collaborations between Malaysian universities and university of Yamanashi.
The 20th Food Intercultural Exchange Event
The cultural exchange event for international students and the local community, “The 20th Food Intercultural Exchange Event” was held at Tamaho International Residence Hall, Medical Campus. Students from Vietnam, China and Nepal joined in the event and introduced their national cuisine this year. There was also a variety of Japanese food offered from local volunteers. Everyone enjoyed exchanging international foods and it brought together about one hundred people of from the local community and the University. They also enjoyed Mochi-tsuki (pounding steamed sticky rice into rice cakes) and Bon-odori (a Japanese traditional folk dance) as well. All participants had a pleasant time, deepening friendship each other.
