International Students Participated in Shingen-ko Festival
On Saturday, October 29, 2022, Shingen-ko Festival was held, and international students took part in the Koshu Battalion Deployment as Mrs. Sanjo’s team.
International students who participated in the festival had a precious experience, dressed in traditional costumes that imitated Mrs. Sanjo’s team and paraded through the streets of Kofu, which were visited by a large number of people.
The international students commented that it was an honor to join such a grand and lively event, and that they were amazed at the beauty of the traditional Japanese costumes.
For international students, it was a valuable experience to take part in a local event.

International students participated in a booth themed on Hoto, a local specialty of Yamanashi.
The booth was a great success, and the international students served Hoto arranged in the style of a street stall in Malaysia, the home country of the participating international students.
It was a great success. It was a great pleasure for the students to see the local people eating the Hoto that they had invented. It was also the first time for them to cook a large quantity of food at one time, so it was a great learning experience for them.
Students enjoyed the event with the local community.
Student Exchange program (outgoing) resumed!
Student exchange program with our partner universities, which was suspended after 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resumed in this September. Four students, two to Oxford Brooks University in United Kingdom and two to Technology University, Dresden in Germany, started to study abroad.
One month has passed since the start of the study abroad program, and we have received monthly report from students saying, “getting used to live in UK/Germany”, “making friends with local students and students from other countries, and helping each other” and “There are still times when I cannot hear or say what I want to say in class or during conversations, but I try to communicate actively as much as possible and write down new words and phrases in my notebook when I see them, so that I can try and use them myself”.
Even though they are busy with classes starting as soon as they arrive, they seem to be having a fulfilling study abroad experience, enjoying local life, walking around the city, and interacting with other students.

A3I Short Program 2022
The A3I short program was held from 17 (Wed) to 30 (Tue) August 2022 in Room B1-222 at the Kofu Campus and streamed online.
This short program was a part of the ” Asia Applied Artificial Intelligence (A3I): Real Problem Solving Driven Artificial Intelligence Education Program”, adopted by the CAMPUS Asia Plus from MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology – Japan), and aimed to promote cultural exchanges. Co-organised by four universities in the consortium – University of Yamanashi (Japan), Hangzhou Dianzi University (China), Pukyong National University (South Korea) and University Malaysia Perlis (Malaysia) – and conducted in English as the common language, and connecting the 4 countries online.
Each university provided its own distinctive program despite the online presence, including virtual campus tours, traditional and cuisine culture experiences, and cross-cultural discussions, which helped to participate students to enhance their intercultural competence and English communication skills. The University of Yamanashi session included lectures with hands-on experience by two groups of external lecturers, Ms Mika Awaji (5th Iemoto of Reido Koryu) and Ms Reina Kurosawa and Mr Takatoshi Furuya (Sawataya), providing a valuable opportunity for the participating students to experience Japanese culture.
On the final day, a student group presentation was held to show the results of the 10 days of activities and to express their resolution to make the most of what they have learnt in the course.
This year, the program was conducted jointly by the four universities online, but programs are planned to be hosted at each university, including actual visits from other universities and interactions with local students. The programme made a significant contribution to the promotion of international exchange among universities, with some students saying that they would like to visit the universities in which friends they met through the programme study and deepen their friendships by keeping in touch with them until they actually meet in person. Added to this, participants mentioned that they gained confidence in speaking with people from different cultural backgrounds and deepened their knowledge of their own and other countries’ cultures, which indicated that the programme had broad educational impacts supporting various aspects of learning.

Lecture on Crime Prevention for International Students
On Friday, July 29, 2022, the Center for International Education and Exchange and the Office of International Affairs held an online crime prevention lecture for international students by the Kofu Police Department, attended by about 40 international students.
This event is held every year with the cooperation of the Kofu Police Department to ensure a safe student life for international students.
This year, we invited assistant police inspector Keita Wakabayashi and Police Sergeant Yu Ashizawa, who gave detailed explanations on a wide range of topics such as theft, molestation, dangerous drugs, and stimulants.
Police Sergeant Ashizawa said, “You may have an image that Japan is a safe country, but there are people who commit crimes even in Japan, and it is possible to get involved in crimes. I want you to learn about crime and be very careful,” he said.
